What it is, and why it moves gold, the dollar, the Nasdaq and bitcoin

The Federal Open Market Committee sets the federal funds rate and publishes a policy statement. Some meetings also include economic projections. The chair's press conference follows the statement. Minutes of the discussion are a separate release about three weeks later.

A higher rate, or a statement read as keeping rates higher, generally supports the US dollar and weighs on gold, the Nasdaq, and bitcoin. A lower rate, or a statement read as opening the door to lower rates, is generally read the other way. The statement and the press conference can move prices even when the rate itself is unchanged, because they change what markets expect the committee to do next. This is how the release is used. It is not a forecast of the next print and not a recommendation to buy or sell.
