Nonfarm Payrolls, Unemployment Rate, and Average Hourly Earnings (October 2026)

Forecast in the calendar: +65K payrolls; unemployment 4.2%; AHE +0.3% MoM

What it is, and why it moves gold, the dollar, the Nasdaq and bitcoin

The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes the Employment Situation report once a month. It includes the change in nonfarm payrolls, the unemployment rate, average hourly earnings, and revisions to the previous two months.

A stronger labor market is generally read as support for the US dollar and for higher bond yields. Higher yields raise the discount rate used for the Nasdaq and for bitcoin, and they raise the opportunity cost of holding gold. A weaker report is generally read the other way. Wages and revisions can matter as much as the headline payroll number. This is how the release is used. It is not a forecast of the next print and not a recommendation to buy or sell.
