What it is, and why it moves gold, the dollar, the Nasdaq and bitcoin
A purchasing managers' index is a diffusion index. A reading above 50 means more firms reported expansion than contraction. In the US, ISM publishes manufacturing and services surveys, and S&P Global publishes a flash estimate earlier in the month. Sub-indexes cover new orders, employment, and prices paid.
A stronger reading, especially with a hot prices-paid index, is generally read as firmer activity and as upward pressure on interest rates. That can support the US dollar and weigh on gold, the Nasdaq, and bitcoin. A reading below 50 is generally read as contraction, which can do the reverse. Manufacturing and services can tell different stories in the same month. This is how the release is used. It is not a forecast of the next print and not a recommendation to buy or sell.
