What it is, and why it moves gold, the dollar, the Nasdaq and bitcoin

Personal consumption expenditures prices track what households consume. Core PCE leaves out food and energy. Unlike CPI, the basket adjusts when people switch what they buy, and it includes some spending paid on a household's behalf. The Bureau of Economic Analysis publishes it with personal income and spending.

A hotter core PCE reading is generally read as a reason to keep policy rates higher. That lifts the US dollar and bond yields and can weigh on gold, the Nasdaq, and bitcoin. A cooler reading is generally read the other way. Because the report also includes household spending, a price surprise and a spending surprise can point in different directions on the same morning. This is how the release is used. It is not a forecast of the next print and not a recommendation to buy or sell.

Frequently asked questions

When is Core PCE this month?

Next date not yet published

When a release is listed, it is at 8:30 Eastern Time. Next date not yet published, so this page does not show a Cyprus time for a future release.

When is the next Core PCE?

Next date not yet published

How often is Core PCE released?

Monthly, usually near the end of the following month, often in the same release window as a GDP estimate. Future dates are shown only when they are in the calendar data.

Why do markets watch PCE if CPI already printed?

CPI uses a fixed basket and gives housing a larger weight. PCE adjusts for substitution and is the series the Fed's target refers to. A soft CPI followed by a hot PCE, or the reverse, changes the inflation picture the committee is actually targeting.
